Sports Betting Preview for October 16, 2014&h=253&w=372&zc=1

Busy Thursday–in this post we’ll take a look at Friday’s NHL:

NHL:

CALGARY FLAMES AT COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS:

Flames are now 3-0 on the road after an overtime win against the Blackhawks in Chicago. Jonas Hiller played out of his mind against the Hawks and there’s a game against Winnipeg on deck for Sunday. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Flames give Hiller a night off and start him against a ‘Canadian rival’. Besides, the Flames have been alternating goaltenders with Karri Ramo also having played well (2-0-0 this season). Talk in the media is that the Flames’ starting goalie job is up for grabs and with Hiller making a compelling case against Chicago the ball…er…puck…is now in Ramo’s court to reciprocate. Teams split two games last year with the road team winning both. I like this Columbus team but they’re banged up and a bit overvalued. The Flames, conversely, are markedly improved and undervalued. I’ll take the price on Calgary.

FLORIDA PANTHERS AT BUFFALO SABRES:

Bad against bad. Panthers have won 5 of the last 7 meetings but the Sabres at least have a win this year. 3 of the last 4 head to head have gone ‘Under’ the total but don’t trust Buffalo’s defense (17 goals against in 4 games). So why not play an ‘Over’? I don’t trust Florida’s offense (3 goals in 3 games).

DETROIT RED WINGS AT TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS:

I know we’re just a few games in to the season but I expected more out of the Red Wings coming out of the gate. Sure, Pavel Datsyuk is out but the Wings are otherwise pretty healthy. Jimmy Howard has done his part in goal (6 goals against in 3 games) but Detroit’s offense has sputtered. I’m a huge fan of Thomas Tatar and Gustav Nyquist and the ‘glass half full’ take on the Wings is that they’ve played tough against top flight opponents beating Boston, losing to Anaheim by a goal and losing a rematch to the Bruins in a shootout. Teams will rematch Saturday in Motown. Detroit has won 3 of the last 4 head to head including a 2-0 record in Toronto.

NASHVILLE PREDATORS AT WINNIPEG JETS:

Can’t figure out either of these teams so far. Jets scored 6 against Arizona opening night but just 1 in games against nasty defenders San Jose and Los Angeles. This is their home opener but Nashville is closer to being like the aforementioned California teams than the Coyotes–at least on the defensive end. Preds have a bigger game at Chicago on Saturday night.

PASS

VANCOUVER CANUCKS AT EDMONTON OILERS:

Not sold on Vancouver but the Oilers are a joke defensively allowing 23 goals in 4 games. Vancouver hasn’t done much better on the defensive end (6 goals in 2 games) but can ‘put the biscuit in the basket. 3 straight head to head have gone ‘Over’ as well as 4 of 6. Edmonton ‘Over’ in all four games this year, Vancouver ‘Over’ in both of theirs (one game was against Edmonton). The 5.5 UN total seems too good to be true but hard to see a low scoring affair.

BET VANCOUVER/EDMONTON OVER 5.5 -105

MINNESOTA WILD AT ANAHEIM DUCKS:

Ducks the better team but the Wild are well rested after beating up on Colorado (5-0, 3-0) in back to back games to open the season.
