The NHL All Star Break is over and pro hockey action resumes tonight:

NHL:

ARIZONA COYOTES AT PHILADELPHIA FLYERS:

The Flyers may be past their critical stage and have been ‘treading water’ of late but all is not well in Philly. The team is severely banged up though on the plus side goaltender Steve Mason is nearing a return from injury. He is the harbinger of bad news, however, as he opined earlier today that management may ‘blow up the team‘ if their performance doesn’t improve. Fortunately for Philly, they’ve got an easy opponent to start the second half of the season. This will be a battle between the #38 rated goals against average goaltender in the NHL (Philly’s Ray Emery) and the #42 rated (Arizona’s Mike Smith). Flyers should win but don’t want to lay the price. Instead, we’ll play this one ‘Over’ the total.

NEW YORK RANGERS AT NEW YORK ISLANDERS:

The game of the night with no blizzard to cause a disruption. Both teams in great form heading into the break. The Rangers practiced and stayed on Long Island last night to avoid any weather related issues so this will have a true ‘road game’ feel for them. My power ratings give the Rangers a slight edge and they’re the far better team defensively. Islanders won the first two head to head this year but will have to play the next two months without assist leader Kyle Okposo. Tough absence to fill. The Rangers get a win back tonight.

WASHINGTON CAPITALS AT COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS:

Jackets have had a horrible season dealing with injuries and now they’ve got another big one with goaltender Sergey Bobrovsky out six weeks or so. Curtis McIlhenney gets the start here. Tough spot for a Washington team that lost focus heading into the All Star Break losing three straight. They have to quickly regain the aforementioned focus but they’ve got a much more important game on deck at home against Pittsburgh tomorrow night. The Blue Jackets steal this one despite Barry Trotz’s admonition to the Capitals that they can’t ‘throw away points’.

WINNIPEG JETS AT PITTSBURGH PENGUINS:

Pens will be without Sidney Crosby here and face a tough test against a Winnipeg team that is playing excellent hockey. Pittsburgh has dominated the Jets/Thrashers at home (20-5 L25) but Winnipeg is healthier and playing nasty defense. Mathieu Perrault should return to the lineup tonight for Winnipeg. Jets have been excellent on the road (14-5-5) and should get the win here.

DETROIT RED WINGS AT FLORIDA PANTHERS:

Florida is a tough team to figure. Just when it seems like they’re heading in the right direction they hit a rough patch losing four straight heading into the break. Detroit playing good hockey winning their last 5 and 8 of 10 but will be without goaltender Jimmy Howard. Don’t see the Panthers giving Detroit much trouble here.
