College Basketball Preview for November 17, 2014

College Basketball Preview for November 17, 2014&h=253&w=372&zc=1

Hard to believe that college basketball is already upon us. It starts earlier and earlier each year and there are more games in the early part of the season than ever before. The tendency to wait until the games get meaningful is obvious. No one should want to watch some of these lousy matchups. If I don’t have anything better to do at 6:00 PM Pacific tonight than watch Arizona State play Bethune-Cookman my life has seriously taken a wrong turn at some point.

Unfortunately, if you want to bet college basketball seriously you don’t have the luxury of waiting until after college football is over to start paying attention. I’m not saying you need to watch every minute of every game. Watching sporting events–especially ones that you’ve bet on–is the biggest waste of time in sports gambling. Playing video games, consorting with hookers, sleeping or whatever is time better utilized than watching an excessive number of sporting events. The only reason you should watch sports is because you enjoy them. You’ll hear people insist that you can’t be a successful sports handicapper unless you’re glued to a TV set 18 hours a day. That’s nonsense. Too many people rationalize watching TV games they bet on as ‘research for future bets’ when they really just get off on the dopamine shot they get from wallowing in the risk of profit and loss. Some people just aren’t very bright and/or interesting and can’t find better things to do with their time. So they plop themselves in front of TV screens with their mouth agape.

If you *do* get some benefit from watching games there are plenty of ways to get the benefit without having to watch entire games. Every sport has ‘condensed games’ available on their computer or smartphone apps. YouTube is also your friend as is the DVR as long as you make good use of the ‘fast forward’ button. Like I said before, if you enjoy a sport than have it it. Just don’t buy into the blather of sports betting no-lifers that try to insist you have to watch everything.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL:

HOFSTRA AT NORTH CAROLINA STATE:

Another thing you see a lot early in the college basketball season is bettors that think they’re ‘sharp’ because they take points with a relatively obscure team in matchups against a higher profile team. This sure doesn’t look like a matchup where it’s advisable. The talent mismatch is just too great. NC State wins by 24+.

BET NORTH CAROLINA STATE -12′ OVER HOFSTRA

MIAMI-FL AT FLORIDA:

This line is down to 8 at some places. Just don’t see why you’d want to take a team that didn’t generate much offense a year ago against a team that plays nasty defense.

BET FLORIDA -8 OVER MIAMI-FL

OAKLAND AT EASTERN MICHIGAN:

Oakland was a trendy team last year and they definitely have a good program. What they don’t have is their leading scorer from last year, Travis Bader. Teams that this level often struggle when a big time player like Bader leaves the program.

BET EASTERN MICHIGAN -4 OVER OAKLAND

LOUISIANA TECH AT TEMPLE:

LA Tech had a great year last year while Temple is coming in after an ‘off’ year. Just too big of a price on a team that is unproven so far in the 2014-2015 season. We’ll take the points with Temple.

BET TEMPLE +6 OVER LOUISIANA TECH
