MLB Baseball Betting: Pittsburgh Pirates at Philadelphia Phillies

It might be inappropriate to call a Major League Baseball team ‘gutless’–the game lacks the physical component of hockey or football, after all. Were it appropriate to do so the Pittsburgh Pirates would be the most ‘gutless’ team in the league. They’ve got a fair amount of talent on hand but have been sputtering around the .500 mark all year. They’ve gone on several significant downturns in spots where they looked to be moving into contention. Their own media has said that they look as if they ‘don’t care’ at various points this season and that could be the case now as they’ve slipped 21.5 games back of the NL Central leading Chicago Cubs. It sure looks like they’ve thrown in the towel for the year having lost 11 of their last 13 games.

The Phillies haven’t done anything great lately and they’ve struggled in the month of September losing 7 of 11. They were flirting with the .500 mark immediately after the All Star Break but have slipped ever since and enter this contest 16 games under the ‘Mendoza Line’. Their best case scenario for the rest of the year is keeping the last place Atlanta Braves behind them in the NL East. To their credit, however, the Phillies have never looked as if they’d quit or didn’t care even during their worst losing runs. At this point of the season against this class that might be enough to get the win.

One of the few bright spots for the Pirates of late has been the recent play of right hander Ivan Nova. Nova is coming off of a 1 ER, 6 hit complete game win over Cincinanti in his last start and in his last three has gone 21 innings allowing 14 hits and 4 earned runs with 14 strikeouts against 1 walk. That’s a 1.71 ERA and a 0.714 WHIP in that timeframe and the Pirates won 2 of those three starts.

Philadelphia will counter with right hander Alec Asher who has only one start this season but it was an excellent one. Asher went 6 innings at Washington on 9/8 allowing 2 hits and 0 earned runs. Neither team is anything special against RHP but the Pirates have lost a mind boggling amount of money against them this season going 51-64 -24.5 units.
